Who is our God? What is He like?
He is a careful Creator.
As we travel through the pages of our Bible we come quickly to the next glimpse of glory. We enter into Genesis chapter 2 to behold the handiwork of the Creator in a very special way. He has allowed us to peer in on this most unique of His creative acts… the forming of man. The scripture declares in verse 7:
…the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
In this statement, we find two very interesting facts.
First, it is here, in this context that we are introduced to the Creator in a personal way. “LORD” or “Jehovah” is how He identifies Himself in the passage. We have moved from a broad and all-encompassing general reference to Him as the Deity (“God”) that created all things, to a very personal self-identifying name (“Jehovah”) that reveals the very nature of His being… the self-existent One. The implication is clear from this personal reference that this is not just any “god,” but the “God” Who is the source of life itself. And this truth makes our next observation a most amazing and humbling thing.
The second observation is found in the word “formed” in verse 7. The verse states that He “formed” the first man from the dust of the ground. The word “formed” is a wonderful word that describes the personal care that the Creator demonstrated in His formation of this most special creation. The Hebrew word is “yatsar” and means “to form, to fashion, to shape, to devise with purpose.”
Oh, how this truth flies in the face of the modern evolutionist or naturalist.
Our God, Jehovah, the source of all life, set out on the sixth day of creation, to mold and shape with a special touch this most unique creation called man.
The word “formed” implies that He put His hands to the dust of the earth as the potter does to the clay. With great care and concern, as a master craftsman with a vision in mind of a useful and honorable vessel, He shaped every detail of man with the great purpose of receiving His life and bearing His glory.
Man is not some random or chance construction of cells that developed over time under the process of natural selection, but rather, an intricately designed masterpiece shaped by the careful hands of the Master. What a humbling thought.
